More music!

I realize the music which makes up music.ology is all over the map, but that's part of who I am! I really do enjoy music of all kinds. Sometimes, I will pick up on just one note and follow it to a new song that sticks with me like glue. That is true with our next selection.

Today, I give you two very different versions of this song. The first is the original version as sung by Green Day. Then, I give you my favorite version, the very first way I heard it, recorded by the cast of "American Idiot." Please, listen to both, and you decide. Let me know what you think.

Green Day, "21 Guns"

Do you know what's worth fighting for?
When it's not worth dying for?
Does it take your breath away?
And you feel yourself suffocating?

Does the pain weigh out the pride?
And you look for a place to hide?
Did someone break your heart inside?
You're in ruins

One, twenty-one guns
Lay down your arms
Give up the fight
One, twenty-one guns
Throw up your arms into the sky,
You and I

When you're at the end of the road
And you lost all sense of control
And your thoughts have taken their toll
When your mind breaks the spirit of your soul.

Your faith walks on broken glass
And the hangover doesn't pass
Nothing's ever built to last
You're in ruins

One, twenty-one guns
Lay down your arms
Give up the fight
One, twenty-one guns
Throw up your arms into the sky,
You and I

Did you try to live on your own?
When you burned down the house and home?
Did you stand too close to the fire?
Like a liar looking for forgiveness from a stone

When it's time to live and let die
And you can't get another try
Something side this heart has died
You're in ruins...

One, twenty-one guns
Lay down your arms
Give up the fight
One, twenty-one guns
Throw up your arms into the sky

One, twenty-one guns
Lay down your arms
Give up the fight
One, twenty-one guns
Throw up your arms into the sky,
You and I

An ode...

...to the Lion King!

These two songs are for my girl and one of my oldest and dearest friends, Pete. In honor of the Lion King's release in 3D, I give you two selections from this, one of my most favorite movies!

"I Just Can't Wait to Be King"

[Simba:] I'm gonna be a mighty king
So enemies beware!

[Zazu:] Well I've never seen a king of beasts
With quite so little hair

[Simba:] I'm gonna be the main event
Like no king was before
I'm brushing up on looking down
I'm working on my roar

[Zazu:] Thus far, a rather uninspiring thing

[Simba:] Oh, I just can't wait to be king!

[Simba:] No one saying do this
[Nala:] No one saying be there
[Simba:] No one saying stop that
[Nala:] No one saying see here
[Zazu:] Now see here!
[Simba:] Free to run around all day
Free to do it all my way

[Zazu:] I think it's time that you and I
Arranged a heart to heart

[Simba] Kings don't need advice
From little hornbills for a start

[Zazu:] If this is where the monarchy is headed
Count me out
Out of service, out of Africa
I wouldn't hang about
This child is getting wildly out of wing

[Simba:] Oh, I just can't wait to be king

Everybody look left
Everybody look right
Everywhere you look I'm
Standing in the spotlight

[Animals:] Let every creature go for broke and sing
Let's hear it in the herd and on the wing
It's gonna be King Simba's finest fling

[Simba:] Oh, I just can't wait to be king!
Oh, I just can't wait to be king!
Oh, I just can't wait to be king!

"Be Prepared"

[Scar:] I know that your powers of retention
Are as wet as a warthog's backside
But thick as you are, pay attention
My words are a matter of pride

It's clear from your vacant expressions
The lights are not all on upstairs
But we're talking kings and successions
Even you can't be caught unawares

So prepare for a chance of a lifetime
Be prepared for sensational news
A shining new era
Is tiptoeing nearer

[Shenzi:] And where do we feature?

[Scar:] Just listen to teacher
I know it sounds sordid
But you'll be rewarded
When at last I am given my dues!
And injustice deliciously squared
Be prepared!

[Hyena:?] Be prepared for what?
[Scar:] For the death of the king!
[Hyena:?] Why? Is he sick?
[Scar:] No, you fool, we're going to kill him... and Simba too!
[Hyena:?] Great idea! Who needs a king?
[Hyenas:] No king, No king, nah nah nah nah nah nah!
[Scar:] Idiots! There will BE a king!
[Hyena:?] But you just said...
[Scar:] *I* will be king!
Stick with me, and you'll never be hungry again!
[Hyenas:] YEA!!!!!! Long live the king!

It's great that we'll soon be connected
With a king who'll be all-time adored

[Scar:] Of course, quid pro quo, you're expected
To take certain duties on board
The future is littered with prizes
And though I'm the main addressee
The point that I must emphasize is
You won't get a sniff without me

So prepare for the coup of the century
Be prepared for the murkiest scam
(Ooooh!)
Meticulous planning
(We'll have food!)
Tenacity spanning
(Lots of food)
Decades of denial
(We repeat)
Is simply why I'll
(Endless meat)
Be king undisputed
(Aaaaaaaaaah!)
respected, saluted
(Aaaaaaaaaah!)
And seen for the wonder I am
(Aaaaaaaaaah!)

Yes my teeth and ambitions are bared
Be prepared!

[Hyenas:] Yes, our teeth and ambitions are bared
Be prepared!

I'm a little behind...

I apologize for my absence this week. I'm up to my eyeballs in packing boxes, and I'm ready to get this move over with...too bad it's only four months after the last one. Yeesh!

When my father and I moved to NC in the summer of 1986, there was only one tape in the moving truck, Johnny Maestro and the Brooklyn Bridge. We listened to it over and over during the 16 hour trip. I was ten years old and very scared to move so far away from everything I ever knew. My Papa and I talked, although I have long forgotten about what, and I counted mile markers during the times I managed to stay awake. That cassette defined that trip for me, and is my favorite album to this day. My favorite song also come from that song. Today I give you "The Worst That Could Happen."

Girl, I heard you're getting married
Heard you're getting married,
this time you're really sure
And this is the end,
they say you really mean it
This guy's the one that makes you feel
so safe, so sane and so secure
And, baby, if he loves you more than me
Maybe it's the best thing
Maybe it's the best thing for you
But it's the worst that could happen to me

I'll never get married
Never get married, you know that's not my scene
But a girl like you needs to be married
I've known all along you couldn't
live forever in between
And, baby, if he loves you more than me
Maybe it's the best thing
Maybe it's the best thing for you
But it's the worst that could happen to me

And, girl, I don't really blame you
for having a dream of your own
Hey, girl, I don't really blame you
A woman like you needs a house and a home, baby
If he really loves you more than me
Maybe it's the best thing
Maybe it's the best thing for you
But it's the worst that could happen

Oh, girl, don't wanna get married
Girl, I'm never, never gonna marry, no no
No, it's the worst that could happen
The worst that could happen
Oh, girl, the worst that could happen

Mark Bingham

Today's music comes to you from Melissa Etheridge. "Tuesday Morning" is a loving tribute to Mark Bingham, one of the heroes of Flight 93 that crash landed in Shanksville, PA on Tuesday, September 11, 2001. Mark is believed to be one of the four to storm the cockpit of Flight 93, saving countless lives on the ground. Wikipedia has this to say about Mark, "Bingham was survived by his boyfriend of six years, Paul Holm, who said that Bingham had risked his life to protect the lives of others.[5][6] He had twice successfully protected Holm from attempted muggings, one at gunpoint.[6] Holm described Bingham as a brave, competitive man, saying, "He hated to lose — at anything."[6] He was even known to proudly display a scar he received after being gored at the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona, Spain.[6]" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Bingham)

Please, listen to the words, and the emotion of each note. To this day, the song still gives me chills.

Melissa Etheridge, "Tuesday Morning"

10:03 on a Tuesday morning
in the fall of an American dream
a man is doing what he knows is right
on flight 93

Loved his mom and he loved his dad
loved his home and he loved his man
but on that bloody Tuesday morning
he died and American

(chorus)
Now you cannot change this
You can't erase this
You can't pretend this is not the truth

Even though he could not marry
Or teach your children in our schools
Because who he wants to love
Is breaking your God's rules

He stood up on a Tuesday Morning
In the terror he was brave
And he made his choice and without a doubt
A hundred lives he must have saved

(chorus)

And the things you might take for granted
Your inalienable rights
Some might choose to deny him
Even though he gave his life

Can you live with yourself in the land of the free
And make him less of a hero than the other three
Well it might begin to change ya
In a field in Pennsylvania

(chorus)

Stand up America
Hear the bell now as it tolls
Wake up America
It's Tuesday Morning
Let's roll

(chorus)

Today We Remember...

In honor of the First Responders who gave their lives to save those who would never be saved.

Live, "Overcome"

even now the world is bleedin' but feelin' just fine all numb
in our castle where we're always free to choose never free enough
to find i wish somethin' would break cuz we're runnin' out of time

and i am overcome i am overcome holy water in my lungs i am overcome

these women in the street pullin' out their hair my master's
in the yard givin' light to the unaware this plastic little place
is just a step amongst the stairs

and i am overcome i am overcome baby holy water in my lungs i am overcome

so drive me out out to that open field turn the ignition off
and spin around your help is here but i'm parked in this open space
blockin' the gates of love

i am overcome i am overcome holy water in my lungs i am overcomed

beautiful drowning this beautiful drowning this holy water
this holy water is in my lungs

and i am overcome i am overcome i am overcome i am overcome

I have one more to share for today...

I will admit, I am not a big fan of our next artist, but the words to this song really fit my mood more than the song as a whole. Trust, it will not hurt my feelings one bit if you don't like it. lol Again, click on the lyrics for a little surprise...

Sara Bareilles, "King of Anything"

Keep drinking coffee, stare me down across the table
While I look outside
So many things I’d say if only I were able
But I just keep quiet and count the cars that pass by

You’ve got opinions, man
We’re all entitled to ‘em, but I never asked
So let me thank you for your time, and try not to waste anymore of mine
And get out of here fast

I hate to break it to you babe, but I’m not drowning
There’s no one here to save

Who cares if you disagree?
You are not me
Who made you king of anything?
So you dare tell me who to be?
Who died and made you king of anything?

You sound so innocent, all full of good intent
Swear you know best
But you expect me to jump up on board with you
And ride off into your delusional sunset

I’m not the one who’s lost with no direction
But you’ll never see
You’re so busy making maps with my name on them in all caps
You got the talking down, just not the listening

And who cares if you disagree?
You are not me
Who made you king of anything?
So you dare tell me who to be?
Who died and made you king of anything?

All my life I’ve tried to make everybody happy
While I just hurt and hide
Waiting for someone to tell me it’s my turn to decide

Who cares if you disagree?
You are not me
Who made you king of anything?
So you dare tell me who to be?
Who died and made you king of anything?

Who cares if you disagree?
You are not me
Who made you king of anything?
So you dare tell me who to be?
Who died and made you king of anything?

Let me hold your crown, babe

A new experiment...for me, anyway!

Due to extenuating circumstances, I've spent the last two days with no tunes in my car. I hate it. I LOVE, LIVE FOR music. It's my bread and butter, it's my peanut butter sammie. It's what makes me happy, and floats my boat. I can name that tune in sometimes less than the first note! I would die without music. With that being said, being without music has made me appreciate the music I have heard as of late even more than I used to. So, since this is my happy space on the web, I have opted to start recording my favorite songs, new and old, here in my space. I hope you enjoy what I have to share. And, please, please, please, share with me your favorites! I really want to expand my collection with those songs that are both popular and off the beaten path. I'm so excited about doing this!!

I've got a lot to share, but, first, I give you Mumford & Sons "Little Lion Man". Mumford & Sons has an amazing sound resembling a sort of rock-bluegrass fusion. It's hot and fresh! I also highly recommend their cut "The Cave" from the same album. After reading them, click on the lyrics below for a little surprise!

Weep for yourself, my man,
You'll never be what is in your heart
Weep Little Lion Man,
You're not as brave as you were at the start
Rate yourself and rake yourself,
Take all the courage you have left
Wasted on fixing all the problems
That you made in your own head

But it was not your fault but mine
And it was your heart on the line
I really fucked it up this time
Didn't I, my dear?
Didn't I, my...

Tremble for yourself, my man,
You know that you have seen this all before
Tremble Little Lion Man,
You'll never settle any of your scores
Your grace is wasted in your face,
Your boldness stands alone among the wreck
Now learn from your mother or else spend your days Biting your own neck

But it was not your fault but mine
And it was your heart on the line
I really fucked it up this time
Didn't I, my dear? (x2)

Didn't I, my dear?

Ahhhhh......

But it was not your fault but mine
And it was your heart on the line
I really fucked it up this time
Didn't I, my dear? (x2)

Didn't I, my dear?
